Welcome to my website. I hope you find it interesting.
I was brought up in a family with a tradition of home crafts and I don’t remember learning to sew or using a sewing machine. I trained as a scientist but realised a childhood ambition to become a potter. I still make domestic and commemorative pieces whilst developing the artistic side of my nature in patchwork.
I am a member of The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles www.quiltersguild.org.uk and two groups within the guild, Contemporary Quilt and the British Quilt Study Group. I am a member of By Design http://www.bydesigntextiles.co.uk and we hold regular exhibitions.
We at By Design are now working on our 7th exhibition, unfortunately without June Thorpe who died in April 2014. One piece in this exhibition will have a contribution from her.
My quilts are statements about myself and my concern for the environment or experiments with traditional techniques. Ideally a piece will combine both. The driving force in my work is the finished effect and not the technique. The techniques used will be influenced by a personal need for accuracy and neatness. Working in series, particularly when exploring a technique, allows me to experiment and satisfy the ‘what if’ questions. Colour is very important and I prefer to use fabrics I have dyed myself, giving me infinite choice. I have been using the computer for design and printing.
I do not expect people to like my work but hope to make them think about the subject I have chosen.
